Flexible categorization in perceptual decision making

چکیده

Abstract Perceptual decisions rely on accumulating sensory evidence. This computation has been studied using either drift diffusion models or neurobiological network exhibiting winner-take-all attractor dynamics. Although both can account for a large amount of data, it remains unclear whether their dynamics are qualitatively equivalent. Here we show that in the model, but not an increase stimulus fluctuations duration promotes transitions between decision states. The number leads to crossover weighting mostly early evidence (primacy) late (recency), prediction validate with psychophysical data. Between these two limiting cases, found novel flexible categorization regime, which reverse initially-incorrect categorizations. reversal asymmetry results non-monotonic psychometric curve, distinctive feature model. Our findings point correcting reversals as important perceptual making.

Decision making under uncertain categorization

Two experiments investigated how category information is used in decision making under uncertainty and whether the framing of category information influences how it is used. Subjects were presented with vignettes in which the categorization of a critical item was ambiguous and were asked to choose among a set of actions with the goal of attaining the desired outcome for the main character in th...

Perceptual categorization: connectionist modelling and decision rules.

Although it is currently popular to model human associative learning using connectionist networks, the mechanism by which their output activations are converted to probabilities of response has received relatively little attention. Several possible models of this decision process are considered here, including a simple ratio rule, a simple difference rule, their exponential versions, and a winn...

The Phantom Decoy Effect in Perceptual Decision-making 1 RUNNING HEAD: The Phantom Decoy Effect in Perceptual Decision-making The Phantom Decoy Effect in Perceptual Decision-making

A phantom decoy is an alternative that is superior to another “target” option, but is unavailable at the time of choice. In value-based decisions involving phantom decoys (e.g., consumer choices), individuals often show increased preference for the similar, inferior target option over a non-dominated competitor alternative. Unlike value-based decisions that are driven by subjective goals, perce...

Oscillatory Network Dynamics in Perceptual Decision-Making

Synchronized oscillations of ensembles of neurons in the brain underlie human cognition and behaviors. Neuronal network oscillations can be described by the physics of coupled dynamical systems. This dissertation examines the dynamic network activities in two distinct neurocognitive networks, the salience network (SN) and the ventral temporal cortex-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (VTC-DLPFC) ne...

Auditory perceptual decision-making based on semantic categorization of environmental sounds

Discriminating complex sounds relies on multiple stages of differential brain activity. The specific roles of these stages and their links to perception were the focus of the present study. We presented 250 ms duration sounds of living and man-made objects while recording 160-channel electroencephalography (EEG). Subjects categorized each sound as that of a living, man-made or unknown item. We ...
